Where to Stay

If you plan to visit Greece too, you should know that prices in Athens and Thessaloniki are actually quite reasonable. Staying in a hostel dorm room will only cost you around $20 a night.

When you start looking for hotels on the islands, prices will rise quickly. If you come prepared to stay in a bare-boned hostel, you can still make it happen for around 20 dollars per night if you book in advance.

Hostelworld is a great resource when looking for budget accommodations.

When to Go

It’s summer in Greece, and that means it’s the perfect time to visit. Traveling to Greece in May or September will still be warm but you’ll find fewer tourists and lower prices.

July and August are the hottest months of the year, and the prices go up with them. The heat and crowds can become unbearable, but if you love getting an authentic sense of the culture and mingling with locals, summer isn’t the time to do it.

That said some places do shut down outside of peak season, so you need to plan ahead. Before you book, read my full guide on when to visit Greece.

Transportation

There are several different ways to move around Greece. First, you can use the train to get around for short distances. Second, you can use buses to get around for short distances. Third, you can use taxis to travel around for short distances.

The high cost of airfare may seem a bit surprising, especially when you consider that a five-hour bus journey can be completed for as little as $35.

Planning a trip to Greece might not be as difficult as you think. When it comes to saving money, travel sites like Skyscanner can help. They easily organize the best deals for airlines like Aegean Olympic and RyanAir. All of these budget carriers make flying around Greece an affordable dream vacation.
Ferries

When it comes to traveling by ferry, one of the best options is Greece. The country has a well-run ferry system that operates on a regular schedule. You can purchase an affordable ticket for the short trips, without having to board in any cabin.

If you decide to take a longer trip on the seas, go with an overnight ferry like Blue Star Ferries. They are half the price of speed ferries and it’s easy to get comfortable.

Street  Travel

When traveling around town there are a couple of mobile apps to use. First up is the app called Uber. While Greece doesn’t allow Uber drivers to operate as they do in many other countries you can still use the app to call a taxi in Athens.

For the rest of Greece, there is an app called Beat (former Taxibeat) where you can find reviewed drivers. Taxi travel is cheap in Greece and the apps will run around the same price as cabs you can find on the street.

If you’re staying in one place for a while, a moped is an excellent choice. It’s cheap, quick, and the way that many of the locals get around.
